The Information Security Group of Africa – Introduction

In June 2012, The Information Security Group of Africa turned 7 years old!  ISG Africa is a non-profit organisation formed in 2005 and was created in response to the increase of IT security compromises and Cyber Crime in general,  in South Africa and the rest of the African continent.  The Information Security Group of Africa is run by a group of volunteers since 2005 who are determined to raise executive awareness and assist organisations with the broad range of information risks facing the African continent.

This Group consists of security professionals from Corporate, Government and IT, providing the mechanism for regular exchange of information security knowledge.  It facilitates networking within the community whilst raising awareness of vulnerabilities and global threats in the African context of.  They have played a pivotal role in raising the profile of information security in South Africa and Africa.

Since inception, the ISG Africa Membership database has grown considerably each year to now several thousand members.

Every year our members tell us of the value and benefits they have received from our Chapter Meetings, Special Interest Groups (SIG), bi-weekly newsletters, white papers, job vacancies and simply having a point of call when they are in trouble or need information. Telling their story has been a vital part of our success!

In this video Information Security Group of Africa members Craig Rosewarne, Peet Smith and Ryan Ruthven provide insight into current information security trends, sharing the ISGA’s vision for 2012 and why interested parties should join the ISGA and attend monthly chapter meetings.

We believe that ISG Africa is well positioned to move forward with a significant development and expansion effort.  To highlight just a few of its achievements:

  • • The ISG Africa community came together to form a committee to comment on the drafting of the Cyber Security Policy
  • • The Privacy SIG Released an invaluable white paper on addressing the PoPI Bill
  • • Assisted many companies with credible and reliable staff and job vacancies
  • • Since 2005, what started as IS awareness and networking meetings has now grown to active Chapter meetings in Gauteng, Cape Town, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Nigeria.

Active chapters:

Gauteng / Western Cape / KwaZulu Natal / Nigeria

Special Interest Groups:

  • • Privacy
  • • Payment Card Industry (PCI)
  • • Cybercrime
  • • Penetration testing / Vulnerability management
  • • Information Security Management

Current Situation

ISG Africa is still governed by its management team that each year volunteers time to serve the African information security community free of charge.  Our regular chapter meetings are also still free to attend after all these years!

Our Vision

ISG Africa is looking to expand its footprint into Africa with potential chapters to soon be opened in Kenya, Mauritius and Morocco.

In light of the increasing demands of cybercrime in South Africa, we believe that ISG Africa is well positioned to move forward with a significant expansion effort to bring important stakeholders together in this sector.
